Having a “Thing”

Every great restaurant menu has a “thing.” But if it’s all “things,” then the establishment becomes difficult to define or, worse, abandoned to a tiny niche market. Every ice cream place has Cookies & Cream– and also each has its own Grasshopper Pie or Bailey’s Chocolate Chip Cheesecake.  But others end up being all shtick. Heck, that’s why there are so many Italian places… and they all haveworld-famous” cannolis.

An incredible new restaurant back home in Miami, Whisk Gourmet, focuses on keeping it simple: sandwiches, salads, and some desserts. Their “thing”? Daily specials. As much as our entire family loves their sandwiches, when we talk about Whisk, what people remember are its daily specials– and that’s what keeps people coming back. And talking about it themselves.

It’s the very, very rare restaurant that can do it all and do it well.
